Acupuncture for Hayfever & Sinusitis

Evidence from systematic reviews suggests that acupuncture and moxibustion may be a safe and effective treatment for allergic rhinitis with benefits over conventional medicine (Xiao 2009). Randomised controlled trials have found that acupuncture used as an adjunct to routine care for allergic rhinitis has clinically relevant and persistent benefits (Brinkhaus 2008). Such trials have also found that acupuncture is effective in the symptomatic treatment of perennial rhinitis (hayfever) and all those pesky symptoms that you get in the spring time!

Weekly acupuncture is recommended a month prior to spring for best results. When symptoms develop, treatment is usually performed twice a week. Herbal medicine may also be prescribed alongside your treatment for stubborn cases.

Acupuncture is a tried and tested system of traditional medicine, which has been used in China and other eastern cultures for thousands of years to restore, promote and maintain good health. Its benefits are now widely acknowledged all over the world.

Traditional Chinese Herbs for Hayfever & Sinusitis

As well as taking your prescribed chinese herbs, you can also use raw chinese herbs in a steam inhalation to help open up the sinuses and give you some relief. Herbs like mint, ginger and patchouli are perfect for this!

Take 1-2 tablespoons of dried herbs, pop them in a large bowl of hot water and place a towel over the head while you inhale the steam. Stay safe – don’t use boiling water and be mindful of carrying a container of hot water!
